An adjective is a word that describes a noun, whether it refers to a person, animal, thing, or place. Adjectives are essential components of both spoken and written language, as they enhance communication and convey a more precise description of the noun they modify. In everyday conversations, adjectives play a crucial role in providing additional information, which is why they are essential to learn when studying Arabic.

For example: “ancient قديم, beautiful جميل , smart ذكي, old  كبير, young   صغير ,  new جديد”.

Arabic adjectives qualify another noun and are either termed as “Naat نَعْتٌ” or “As-siffah الصِّفَةُ”. In the Arabic language, the adjectives come after the noun being qualified or described, which is called “Manoot مَنْعُوتٌ” or “Al-mawsuff الْمَوْصُوفُ”.

For example: Clever student      تلميذ ذكي

If translated linguistically means “Student clever”, but literally it means “Clever student”.

To fully understand adjectives, it is best to have a sentence in which the relationship between the adjective and the word it describes is clear, as this combination is very important. Want to know why?

Well, the adjective follows the noun that it is describing in everything:

-        In being a definite or indefinite noun.

-        In being masculine or feminine.

-        In being singular, dual, or plural.

Adjectives are words that describe how something looks, feels, appears, tastes, smells, or how many things there are. Enriching your vocabulary with adjectives leads to mastery of spoken Arabic.
